September 3, 1996 - Nearly 80 billion pounds of plastic are produced each year in the United States, more than triple the amount produced 20 years ago. To counter the concerns of environmentalists, the plastic industry has mounted an agressive campaign to promote plastic recycling. Technically, all types of plastic are recyclable, but the concept of plastic recycling is often quite different from the reality.

May 6, 1996 - Congressman Bruce Vento has introduced legislation to provide greater wilderness protection for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyaguers National Park. The bill is intended to counter legislation introduced by Representative James Oberstar to increase motorized use of the two areas.
April 24, 1996 - Florence Township has asked a Ramsey County District Judge to suspend the search for an alternative nuclear waste storage site. Northern States Power has chosen two possible locations to store radioactive waste from its Prairie Island Nuclear plant. Both sites are in Florence Township.
February 1, 1996 - A bill that would extend the life of Northern States Power's Prairie Island nuclear plant is meeting substantial opposition at the state capital. The bill's chief senate sponsor, Steve Novak, says it can't pass in its current form. A first hearing, was postponed while legislators search for a compromise.
January 4, 1996 - Today in Saint Cloud, stakeholders in the debate over Minnesota's wetland protection law will convene for a two day meeting called by Governor Arne Carlson. It's an attempt to get both sides to resolve their differences and come up with a workable reform plan. Pressure to overhaul the law has been building, especially in rural Minnesota. Efforts to pass a reform bill failed last year, and all sides are hoping that won't happen again in this legislative session.
December 27, 1995 - On any given night, an estimated 750 thousand people in the United States are homeless. Over the course of a year, more than 2 million people in this country will cycle in and out of homelessness.
