And much of the discussion has been about what should be done with projected mutli-trillion dollar federal surplus. October 26, 2000 - Federal regulators concerned about airline industry conslidation expect to go to court next week, to argue that Northwest Airlines should be forced to SELL its controlling interest in Continental Airlines. The Department of Justice is concerned that the airline's wont agressively compete under joint ownership. October 20, 2000 - Fire crews from all over the country are still working to contain a brush fire north of the Twin Cities in and around the Carlos Avery Wildlife Refuge. The fire is burning just east of Interstate 35 between Stacy and Wyoming. Ashes from a homeowner's recreational fire sparked the blaze which has burned about ten thousand acres, and forced numerous evacuations. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports.

October 10, 2000 - DFL Congressman Bruce Veto died after announcing on Feb 2nd 2000 his diagnosis with lung cancer and decision not to seek reelection. Vento held Minnesota's fourth Congressional district House of Representatives seat for nearly 24 years. He's remembered as a champion of working people, the environment and the homeless. Republican incumbent Senator Rod Grams has been calling Dayton a hypocrite for selling energy and pharacueticals stocks now that's he's running for office. September 25, 2000 - General Mills says shareholders will vote by the end of the year on management's plans to purchase Pillsbury in a ten and a half BILLION dollar deal. Food industry analysts say despite the enormous price tag, the acquisition would be a move in the right direction. But a former General Mills executive is trying to BLOCK the deal saying it's too risky. General Mills held its annual shareholder's meeting today in Minneapolis.
