October 26, 2000 - The Wilder Research Center begins a survey of Minnesota's homeless population today. The survey is conducted every three years. This year's results will document ten-year trends among people living on streets, in shelters, and in transitional living centers. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
October 13, 2000 - The funeral service for Congressman Bruce Vento were helt today at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Yesterday hundreds attended Vento's visitation to pay last their respects to a man many loved and honored. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman has this report.
October 11, 2000 - Children adopted from overseas are born into one culture and raised in another. They grow up aware their origins are far different from their parents. "Adoption tours" are gaining popularity for internationally adopted children and their parents. Adoption experts say these are emotional journeys that can fulfill adopted children's desires to learn who they are. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman has our final part in our series on international adoption.
October 10, 2000 - When families adopt from overseas they often know little about their children. Some have a few lines from a medical report or maybe a postage stamp-sized photograph. Over the past decade videos have become increasingly popular as a way to introduce a child to prospective parents. The videos are sometimes useful in determining a child's health, but some conditions are not visible on tape leaving many parents unprepared for their child. October 9, 2000 - State officials today announced creation of a unified plan for managing water in Minnesota. They say "Minnesota Watermarks" represents the first time local, state, and federal agencies and some citizens' groups have collaborated to create a common vision for water quality and use. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
October 9, 2000 - Researchers at the University of Minnesota are planning to survey the parents of nearly 4,000 children adopted from overseas between 1990 and 1998. The researchers hope the International Adoption Project will lead to a better understanding of the health and behavior of children adopted from abroad. September 28, 2000 - Representatives of more than 100 Native American tribes have been gathering in Saint Paul this week to learn about ways to bring better phone service to their reservations. Federal Communications Commission officials, who are sponsoring the conference, say nearly half of all American Indians on reservations are without basic phone service, let alone access to the Internet. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
September 25, 2000 - MPR’s Lynette Nyman reports on preserving the history and culture of the Hmong through the mission of an established archives in St. Paul, called Hmong Nationality Archives. Organizers hope to collect, catalog, and make available materials about or by Hmong in Minnesota, and eventually around the world.
September 18, 2000 - Community activists and legislators at the state capitol today (Monday) registered their outrage at the inadequacy of spending on treatment programs for adolescents addicted to drugs and alcohol. They blamed state and federal governments ... as well as health insurance providers ... for what they call the immoral neglect of youth in need of treatment. The hearing was part of a nation-wide campaign focused on substance-abuse services for teens. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
