She loves reading the most lurid tales from the daily newspapers: the kidnappings and the murders. Her latest novel, "The Tarnished Eye," is based on the real-life unsolved killings of a father, mother and their four children.
June 22, 2004 - Minnesota writer Judith Guest says the true story of the 1968 murder of a family at their Michigan lake home inspired her to write her latest book "The Tarnished Eye." Sheriff Hugh DeWitt is the central character in the novel. He's still grieving the sudden death of his baby son and dealing with the pressure to solve a high-profile murder. The mystery story is a departure for Guest, who is perhaps best known for books focusing on family dynamics. Robert Redford made her novel "Ordinary People" into an Academy award-winning movie starring Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland. Judith Guest told Minnesota Public Radio's Greta Cunningham that she's been thinking about writing a mystery book for a long time.
January 18, 1997 - Judith Guest is known for chronicling suburban family life in turmoil. Her book "Ordinary People" examined a family's reaction after the death of it's eldest son. Guest's story was turned into an Academy Award-winning film starring Mary Tyler Moore and directed by Robert Redford. Her new book "Errands" once again takes us into the life of a grieving family, this time the family is dealing with the death of the father. This story is based on the real-life marriage of Guest's grandparents. Judith Guest says she doesn't think she's fixated on death, she says her dark subject matter allows her to explore how families deal with their emotions.
January 7, 1989 - Susan Williams provides a review of "Killing Time in Saint Cloud" by Judith Guest and Rebecca Hill. The book is a crime novel about a family who moves to St. Cloud, Minnesota, after the death of their mother.
