Jimmy Carter is an American politician and humanitarian who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, and as a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. Carter made numerous visits to Minnesota over his career. He selected Minnesota’s U.S. Senator Walter Mondale as his vice-presidential pick when running for the presidency in 1976 & 1980.
Beyond politics, Carter is well known for his work with Habitat for Humanity and establishing the Carter Center to promote/expand human rights, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Carter was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia.

October 7, 2010 - MPR’s Jess Mador reports on former President Jimmy Carter’s visit to East St. Paul, where he emphasized the need for the government to assist communities devastated by foreclosure. The 86-year-old former president spent a day building homes in north Minneapolis with Habitat for Humanity, followed by next day where he helped repair homes in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood of East St. Paul.
August 19, 2008 - Minnesota native L. Bruce Laingen was charge d'affaires of the American Embassy in Iran when radicals took over the building and held 52 Americans hostage from November 1979 to January 1981. Laingen is back in Minnesota to donate artifacts from that experience to the Minnesota Historical Society, and he joins Midday to talk about his experience during the hostage crisis.

July 15, 1999 - MPR’s Brent Wolfe reports on Minnesota's Habitat for Humanity chapters dedicating their 500th house…this one in Winona. The non-profit group uses volunteer labor and donated materials to build homes for low income families.
