September 23, 2003 - The Univeristy of Minnesota has hired one the nation's leading stem cell researchers. Doctor Doris Taylor, who is currently at Duke University, will fill an endowed professorship called the Medtronic Bakken (BOK-in) Chair in Cardiovascular repair. University officials say she'll direct research that leverages the school's strengths in medical technology... with work done at the U's Stem Cell Institute... and the Biomedical Engineering Institute. That is Dr. Doris Taylor. Dr. Taylor says she expects to move to Minnesota and begin her work here in about a month.

September 23, 2003 - Three Minnesota organizations are among those getting federal money to help faith-based and community groups provide social services to those in need. Yesterday (MONDAY) Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson announced the federal government will give out 60 new grants totaling over 8 million dollars. Breaking Free, and the Lao Family Community of Minnesota, both based in St. Paul, will get small grants. And the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches will recieved over 500-thousand dollars. September 22, 2003 - The Minneapolis Planning Commission will hear a proposal today for a downtown development project adjacent to the Target Center. It would include two thousand housing units as well as retail establishments, all built around a 40 thousand seat outdoor baseball stadium. The housing would be privately-financed. It is unclear where the money would come from for the ballpark. This is the latest in a flurry of stadium news that have been reported in recent weeks. MPR Sports Commentator Jay Weiner is the author of "Stadium Games: Fifty Years of Big League Greed and Bush League Boondoggles."
September 18, 2003 - The Central Standard Film Festival is underway in a variety of theaters around the Twin Cities. It features independent American films that come not from either coast, but from the middle of the country. Several of the films were shot in Minnesota including "Polka Time" about the annual festival in Gibbon, Minnesota.

September 17, 2003 - Over the next five weeks, the public will have a chance to weigh in on what students in Minnesota should learn in social studies class. Education Commissioner Cheri Pierson Yecke is touring the state to hear public comment on the new proposed social studies standards. Those standards emphasize names, places events, and other facts. The final version will replace the more process-oriented Profile of Learning. That is Bill Walsh, a spokesman with the Minnesota Department of Education. We also spoke with Marc Doepner-Hove (DEP ner HOE vee), chair of the social studies department at Mound Westonka High School.
