April 15, 1997 - Three sandbag dikes, four sump pumps and two fire hoses fill Kathy and David Huntstad backyard in Moorhead. This afternoon, like many dikes around the Fargo-Moorhead area, the strain of holding back the Red River began to tell on the Huntstad's dike and it started to give way. Almost immediately neighbors and friends flocked in to help throw 10,000 sandbags onto a new dike. Minnesota Public Radio's Hope Deutscher spoke with Kathy as the work continued.
April 14, 1997 - The people of Fargo Moorhead thought the Red River had crested over the weekend.... but This morning (Thursday) the River began rising again. The level hit 37-point-71 feet... a new record for this century... but still below the all-time record of 39-feet-point-one set in 1897. Residents living along the Red River continue to watch the water as its level fluctuates. Minnesota Public Radio's Hope Deutscher reports. For the second time in four days, the Red River in Fargo-Moorhead reached a new record... and then slowly continued rising.
April 9, 1997 - The National Weather Service has raised the projected crest on the Red River in Fargo Moorhead. It now stands at 39 to 39-and-one-half feet....a foot higher than the previous projection. The crest in Fargo is expected late Thursday or early Friday. The Red in Fargo this morning was at 35-point-59 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet. As Minnesota Public Radio's Hope Deutscher reports....people living along the Red River wasted no time in building up their dikes.
February 11, 1997 - The Duluth public school district will become the first in the state to hire a for-profit company to operate a "charter school." The State Board of Education has voted to approve The Edison Project Charter School proposal. The charter school deal comes as Governor Arne Carlson is proposing new legislation that could open the door to an unlimited number of charter schools in Minneosta. February 4, 1997 - A Minnesota House higher education panel took its meeting on the road last night to the University of Minnesota-Duluth campus. Legislators were greeted by students, educators and community members pleading for more support. Minnesota Public Radio's Hope Deutscher reports.
January 24, 1997 - About forty miles south of Duluth in the town of Moose Lake is the state's only facility to hold and treat men and women convicted under Minnesota's sexual psychopathic personality law.
