June 6, 1997 - The political standoff over education tax credits has put school districts around the state in a bind. Earlier this week the governor vetoed the K-12 spending bill because it didn't contain credits for families' non-public school expenditures. The issue is expected to get resolved sometime this summer during a special legislative session, but in the meantime school administrators are having trouble planning for the 97-98 school year. Minnesota Public Radio's Holly Nelson reports.
April 28, 1997 - The Minnesota Senate Taxes Committee considers a bill this week to increase the state's gas tax. Supporters says the increase is necessary to finance road repairs and upgrades. Many of the state's residents agree the roads need fixing but their reaction to paying for it is mixed. Minnesota Public Radio's Holly Nelson reports.
April 17, 1997 - Small town cafes are fading away quietly. They're being replaced by fast-food restaurants. The local cafe is more than just a place to eat. It's a place to get together with neighbors and catch-up on the latest news around town. St. Peter artist Charles Waterman is putting together a book based on sketches he's drawn at cafes in southern Minnesota. Many of the drawings are of customers at a cafe called Elmer's, located in Le Center since the 1940's. Minnesota Public Radio's Holly Nelson reports.
