June 14, 1997 - Tomorrow is Father's Day, but TODAY hundreds of dads are gathering near the Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge to take part in the "Dad's of Destiny Father's Walk for Peace." The 1-point-8 mile walk along the Mississippi starts at 10:00 this morning. Lamarr Scott is the Project Director for the Dad's of Destiny Walk...he's also involved with "Urban Ventures Center for Fathering." Scott says today's walk is a time for father's to get support.
June 8, 1997 - The annual Twin Cities Juneteenth film festival is underway this weekend. The festival is a showcase for exploring blackness in American culture. Organizers of this year's festival hope the films will spark insights and discussions about race in America.
June 7, 1997 - In sports news..... Horse racing will celebrate its 12th Triple Crown champion today if "Silver Charm" wins the mile and a-half Belmont Stakes. "Silver Charm," which has aready won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, will be ridden by Gary Stevens. Stevens already has "guaranteed" a victory. The last Triple Crown winner was "Affirmed" in 1978. The race starts at 3:30 this afternoon.It seems like St. Paul's bid for a NHL Hockey team is...well, put on ice. St. Paul mayor Norm Coleman says St. Paul is a virtual shoo-in now that plans have been worked out to build a new hockey arena in St. Paul. But NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has a message for the league's six expansion candidates -- Don't rush us.
May 31, 1997 - In sports news: The Philadelphia Flyers take on the Detroit Red Wings in Game One of the Stanley Cup finals tonight. The Flyers have not won hockey's top prize in 22 years and the Red Wings are seeking to end a 42-year title drought. The Minnesota Twins play game two of their three game series against the Anaheim Angels tonight. The Twins are in the midst of a five game road series. Although it seems like plans for a Twins stadiums are "on ice"--hockey plans are heating up in St. Paul, Weekend Edition Sports Commentator Jay Weiner says while a NHL team may come, the Twins are threatening to go---so, we turn to a Marvin Gaye song to summarize this situatuion---WHAT'S GOING ON???

April 19, 1997 - Living in an artists loft may be your secret dream...this weekend you'll get the chance to see if the reality lives up to your expectations. Over 160 artists are opening their lofts and displaying their work as part of this weekend's ST. PAUL ART CRAWL. Craig Thiesen is a photographer living in the Northern Warehouse. He says even as a young artist he always dreamed of living in a Lowertown loft. He says loft living may not be as exotic as people think.
April 13, 1997 - Francisco de Goya's 80 images entitled "The Disasters of War" are on display this weekend at Hamline University. This rare Goya exhibit is part of Hamline's ESPANA festival--a celebraion of Spanish culture. The festival includes speeches by American scholar Noam Chomsky--flamenco dancing, music and art. I toured the Goya exhibit with Curator and Art Professor Leonardo Lasansky. Prof. Lasansky says many people are not familiar with many aspects of Goya's large body of work.
April 12, 1997 - Seventeen Minnesota authors are waking up winners this morning. The 9th Annual Minnesota Book awards were awarded last night at the Minnesota History Center. The Coordinator of the MN Book Awards Roger Sween, says seventy books are nominated for awards this year-another record year for nominations.
April 5, 1997 - Dorothy said, "there's no place like home." Author Barbara Bonner agrees. In her new book "Sacred Ground: Writings About Home" Bonner complies an interesting collections of writings about "home." Barbara Bonner says home has always been the focus of her life. Five years ago Milkweed Editions Publisher Emilie Buchwald asked her to edit "Sacred Ground". The first step in compiling the book was to advertise in literary magazines for material. Bonner says she was overwhelmed with the response.
