December 2, 2003 - Archbishop Harry Flynn received a warm welcome at a community forum in north Minneapolis today. One African American speaker after another praised the head of the St. Paul Minneapolis archdiocese for his recent pastoral letter on racism. November 24, 2003 - Why can't Minneapolis be more like St. Paul That's the question some are asking about police community relations. For whatever reason St. Paul appears to avoid the police abuse allegations that dog Minneapolis. Both cities are seeking new chiefs of police because of retirement. But the new Minneapolis police chief inherits strained relations with some of the city's minority residents. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.
November 18, 2003 - St. Paul officials are breathing a sigh of relief that, for the moment at least, the new St. Paul Travelers Insurance company will be headquartered here. That decision was part of yesterday's Mon announcement of the merger of St. Paul Companies and Travelers insurance to create the nation's second largest business insurer. Analysts say the proposed merger buys the company some time in an environment where change is the order of the day. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.
November 14, 2003 - Police statistics show most crime in downtown Minneapolis is decreasing. Even so, a growing number of people who live and work downtown are concerned about public safety. October 30, 2003 - There's a tiny piece of the Big Woods still standing in Wayzata. Tuesday, voters in the western Twin Cities suburb next to Lake Minnetonka will decide its fate. On the ballot is a proposal, which if approved, would tax Wayzata property owners about three million dollars to help pay for preserving fourteen acres of trees. October 15, 2003 - A Minnesota Marine just back from the war in Iraq says many residents he encountered welcomed American troops. Jorge (George) Alvarado returned home Saturday after nearly nine months of duty that began with combat and ended with security detail. He faced danger at every turn but the incident that injured him was caused by a car crash. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.
October 8, 2003 - Peter Agre's late father predicted his scholarly son would one day win a Nobel prize. The Nobel Committee announced today Agre will share this year's chemistry prize with another American scientist. The 54 year old Agre was raised in Northfield and Minneapolis. His mother Ellen got the call at 6:45 this morning about his award. One of his Augsburg College professors remembers Agre as a model student with a social conscience.
