June 26, 2003 - South Dakota lawmakers head into a special legislative session today. There's only one item on the agenda - that's to create a health care risk pool for people who cannot get health insurance. About a thousand people in South Dakota are unable to get insurance. Their poor health is only part of the problem. More and more insurance companies are pulling out of South Dakota refusing to insure anyone. Mainstreet Radio's Cara Hetland has the story.

June 10, 2003 - Opera's rebirth continues. La Boheme is on Broadway. Opera tickets are selling well just about everywhere. Opera lovers in Sioux Falls are trying to light the flame in hopes of it catching on there. Tomorrow night two South Dakota natives who are now opera stars perform scenes from several operas as a way of introduction. Mainstreet Radio's Cara Hetland spoke with one of them.
June 3, 2003 - Research shows interesting, new correlations between exercise and health. Even obese people who exercise are healthier than thin people who don't. A leading researcher on obesity says you don't have to lose weight to be healthy you just have to walk. People who exercise - no matter what their weight - have half the death rate of those who just sit around. Cara Hetland has the next installment in our Mainstreet Radio series, "The Fight Against Fat." She reports, increasing your life span could be as simple as walking 30 minutes each day.
May 21, 2003 - When the American Heart Association told consumers eggs were high in cholesterol, consumption plummeted. But now, there's a new egg on the market. An egg enhanced with Omega Three Fatty Acid can actually help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol. Minnesota has nearly 11 million hens. It's the 8th highest egg-producing state in the country. Farmers who got out of the egg business now may see a reason to get back in. Mainstreet Radio's Cara Hetland reports:
April 23, 2003 - Over the next few weeks some of America's war heros will return home. The B-52 bomber crews from Minot, North Dakota will be back at their home base. And B-1B bomber crews from South Dakota's Ellsworth Air Force Base will come back from Iraq. Heros from past wars are launching a national program to talk to school kids. The program was founded by former South Dakota Governor Joe Foss. The inaugural presentation was today (Wednesday) in Sioux Falls. Mainstreet Radio's Cara Hetland reports:
April 18, 2003 - A new marketing campaign in South Dakota is sparking an old debate. This time a birth control pill is the target. Officials from Planned Parenthood want women to know there are medical options besides abortion. Opponents of legal abortion says the pill promotes promescuity and is an easy fix. March 19, 2003 - Ranchers in western South Dakota are watching a storm system very carefully. The storm rolling across the plains this week, is crucial. In a region that's seen two years of drought, any snow or rain in the forecast could break the billion dollar drought. Mainstreet Radio's Cara Hetland reports:
July 1, 2002 - Federal officials have assigned a fire in the Black Hills of South Dakota as the highest priority in the Rocky Mountain region. Federal firefighters have taken over fighting the blaze. What's being called the Grizzly Gulch Fire, is burning 62-hundred acres in the northern hills. Nearly 7-hundred firefighters are working the blaze. The fire is about ten percent contained. The towns of Deadwood and Lead (LEED) have been evacuated. 15-thousand residents and tourists were moved to safer locations over the weekend. Officials hope an cold front will push the fire back toward already burned areas.
