March 12, 2002 - Somali community leaders in Minneapolis are appealing to the African American community to join them in protesting the police shooting and killing of a mentally ill Somali man last weekend. Minneapolis officials say the officers acted in accordance with police regulations. But the Somali leaders told a predominantly African American crowd this morning Tuesday the death of Abu Kassim Jelani is a case of police brutality. Some members of the African American community said they can sympathize with the Somalis. Minnesota Public Radio's Brandt Williams reports.

February 12, 2002 - As part of the American RadioWorks project called "Radio Fights Jim Crow," MPR’s Brandt Williams talks with older African Americans in Minnesota about their memories of segregation in the feature “Up South.”
February 6, 2002 - When Africans immigrate to America they confront racism, perhaps for the first time. The longer they live in this country and become African Americans, they realize they are identified more by the color of their skin than by their nationality. In the last part of a series on the relationship between Africans and African Americans, Minnesota Public Radio's Brandt Williams looks at how race can complicate the process of assimilation for African immigrants.
February 5, 2002 - There are more Somalis in Minnesota, than any other African immigrant group. Like nearly all newcomers to America, Somalis have faced racial and ethnic discrimination in their new surroundings. That reality comes as no surprise to African Americans who have experienced racism all their lives. But clashes between Somalis and African Americans caught both communities off guard and was particularly troubling to those who feel the two groups have much in common. Now, groups of Somalis and African Americans are coming together to bridge cultural differences. Minnesota Public Radio's Brandt Williams has the second report in our series on the relationship between Africans and African Americans.

January 23, 2002 - A report entitled All Kids Count, shows that African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Latino youth in Minnesota are much more likely than white children to experience violence, live without health care insurance, and live in poverty. The report was compiled by the Children's Defense Fund and Minnesota Kids Count, a research organization that releases reports on the welfare of the state's youth.
January 10, 2002 - Mike Tice is the interim head coach for the Minnesota Vikings' head coach for their last game. Dennis Green, the previous head coach, was let go last week.
