June 22, 2001 - This week Mainstreet Radio has been examining the challenges facing rural areas as the population ages. Healthcare is a major issue, and in many rural areas the care available through the Veterans Administration is a mainstay. But as veterans age and medical costs skyrocket, how that promise is fulfilled is changing. Mainstreet Radios Bob Reha reports. {
June 11, 2001 - Two years ago Ryan Nelson and Gerry Nybo of Detroit Lakes died when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Train hit their car at a railroad crossing. Nelson and Nybo were just two of the 402 people killed in similar accidents in the US in 1999. For the Nybo and Nelson families the accident has left many unanswered questions: questions they say the BNSF has shown little interest in answering. Now the dead mens' parents have organized Citizens Against Railroad Tragedies, a group working to force changes in the way such accidents are investigated. MainStreet Radios Bob Reha reports.
May 16, 2001 - Even as people are cleaning up from this year's spring flooding, the clean-up continues from flooding LAST year. May 15, 2001 - A wet spring has put many farmers behind schedule planting their crops. In fact inclement weather in the northern part of North Dakota has put some farmers way behind schedule harvesting some of last year's sunflower crops. The wet spring is an unpleasant reminder of last summer when a early season storm moved through the Red River Valley and northwest Minnesota, dumping up to eight inches of rain in the area. The deluge caused millions of dollars in damage to homes and crops. Researchers at North Dakota State University not only lost last years harvest, but valuable time in developing new hybrid crops that farmers need to remain competitive. MainStreet Radio's Bob Reha reports. { For Al Schneiter, *Chair of the Plant Sciences department at North Dakota State University* the flood is just a bad memory. Something he can joke about now. Asked if theres anything positive that came out of last summers disaster he chuckles.

With memories of the historic 1997 flood still fresh in most people's minds, crews work non-stop over the weekend to keep rising water out. Current projections by the national weather service say flood waters will crest slightly above 1997's levels. Mainstreet Radios Bob Reha reports..
April 3, 2001 - *The results of the 2000 census would appear to be good news for *Minnesota's* Native American *population* . April 2, 2001 - When the draft was abolished in 1973, *the decision affected not only the country's military*, it also did away with a primary source of *recruits* for the Indian Health Service . Medical students or Interns facing the draft had the option of serving their time in the Commission Service Corp. To help fill that void the University of North Dakota's Medical school developed the Indians into Medicine or INMED program. Nearly 30 years later, the program is still recruiting and producing health care professionals. Mainstreet Radio's Bob Reha reports.
