December 5, 2003 - Tonight is opening night for the Walker Art Center's most popular film event -- the annual screening of the British Television Advertising Awards.The programs draw more than 10,000 people each year and are consistently sold-out. Audiences will get to see the best of British advertising -- from campaigns featuring a male streaker to avant-garde ads for hot noodles and automobiles. Here's an example: Peter Bigg, the administrator for the British Television Advertising Awards, will speak at tonight's screening. He says the 27th annual event showcases a collision of art and commerce.
November 18, 2003 - The chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board says the plane crash that killed Senator Paul Wellstone and seven others last fall was a tragic accident that should not have happened. The NTSB today (Tues) issued the final report on its investigation into the crash and laid the blame squarely on actions of the flight crew. The board also announced regulatory recommendation it hopes could prevent similar accidents in the future. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports....
October 29, 2003 - A plan for Congress to pass a massive energy bill before it adjourns sometime next month has been delayed. Senate Energy Committee Chairman Pete Domenici of New Mexico has postponed a key meeting scheduled for this week (tuesday) because of an impasse over the bills provisions. Supporters say the bill would give the U-S a comprehensive energy plan for the first time in years and create jobs. Opponents have decried the measure as the "no lobbyist left behind" bill...a takeoff on President Bush's education initiative, "No Child Left Behind." They contend the legislation is full of handouts for the energy industry. Republican Senator Norm Coleman pushing for a couple of items in the package that he says are important to Minnesota. Chad Pergram reports from Washington.
August 11, 2003 - Former U.S. Olympic and Minnesota Gopher hockey coach Herb Brooks died this afternoon in a car accident north of the Twin Cities. Brooks coached the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Olympic team that won the gold medal after defeating Russia in Lake Placid, NewYork. He returned to lead the 2002 U.S. Olympic hockey team to a silver medal. Brooks also coached the Minnesota North Stars, New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers, where he reached the 100-victory mark faster than any other coach in franchise history. Of all the levels of hockey Brooks coached, he told MPR sports commentator Jay Weiner in a 2002 interview that he most enjoyed the Olympic experience:

August 5, 2003 - Investigators from the Episcopal Church USA today cleared an openly gay priest from allegations of sexual improprieties. Yesterday at the church's meeting in Minneapolis, eleventh hour allegations of inappropriate touching against Eugene Robinson threatened to derail approval of his election as bishop of New Hampshire. On Sunday, the church's house of Deputies voted to approve his election. Now that Robinson has been cleared, the House of Bishops is debating whether to give final consent. Minnesota Public Radio's Marisa Helms is at the Convention Center and is on the line with us now.
