August 9, 2004 - Nearly 200 refugees from Burma are arriving in Minnesota. They are members of an ethnic minority called the Karen. They are part of a wave of 4000 resettling in the United States. The Karen have been fighting and losing a civil war with Burma's military leaders for 55 years. The Burmese military has tortured, raped and killed thousands of Karen people. Many of the Karen arriving in Minnesota have been living in refugee camps in Thailand.
August 19, 2004 - A group of Hmong refugees who left St. Paul in June arrived in Washington, D.C. on August 19th, 2004, many of them on foot. Some walked the entire 1100 miles journey; others joined en route. MPR’s David Molpus talks with two involved in march.
August 20, 2004 - MPR’s Chris Roberts talks with Minneapolis singer-songwriter Mark Edwards about his CD "Rewind Tomorrow." Formally of The Domo Sound, Edwards now goes by the moniker The Original Mark Edwards.
August 23, 2004 - Political consultant Dick Morris is often credited with propelling Bill Clinton into the White House for a second term, despite having to resign before the campaign ended amid a prostitution scandal. He's not a Democrat, though. An avowed independent, Morris voted for Al Gore in 2000, but this year, he's thrown his support behind President George W. Bush. He explained his politics and offered his analysis of the American political process at the Commonwealth Club of California on August 10.
August 25, 2004 - Mainstreet Radio's Cara Hetland reports on Ralph Nader’s visit to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In a speech, Nader says the only way to change government is to get involved. He talked for more than two hours criticizing corporate greed, the Bush administration, and the war in Iraq. Nader says historically the nation's best laws have been a reaction to citizen outrage.
August 26, 2004 - Mainstreet Radio’s Bob Reha reports that while schools aren't open yet, report cards are being released nonetheless. The reports won't go to students, but to their schools.
August 27, 2004 - Digital technology has allowed artists to go much, much further in drawing inspiration from nature. One Minneapolis artist uses digitally generated sound designs to create a kind of hypnosis on headphones. The source of the sound?…Water. MPR’s Chris Roberts dives in.
August 28, 2004 - MPR’s Greta Cunningham profiles Ye Old Mill, a staple fair ride that has been attracting sweethearts at the Minnesota State Fair since 1913. It's America's oldest tunnel of love owned by the same family.
August 30, 2004 - Minneapolis Police Chief William McManus met today with several community leaders to discuss concerns raised by a video released this weekend showing an officer striking a handcuffed suspect. After the meeting, community representatives praised police officials for their responsiveness and expressed confidence in an internal police investigation.
August 30, 2004 - Minneapolis community leaders and police are urging residents to let an investigation into allegations of police brutality run its course. Police officials and community representatives met face-to-face today. It's the second meeting since a television report showing video of an officer striking a handcuffed suspect.
