August 14, 2000 - MPR’s Michael Choo reports on a speech Walter Mondale made at The Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Several Minnesotans will play prominent roles in the opening session, including state auditor Judi Dutcher who left the Republicans for the DFL last winter. Former Vice-President Mondale spoke during a breakfast with Minnesota delegates.
August 15, 2000 - One of the great unanswerable questions of U.S. geography is: exactly where does "the west" begin? On the South Dakota border there's a lake that could be used to make a case for Minnesota as the gateway to the west. Mainstreet Radio's Mark Steil profiles Salt Lake, which has more in common with the land of cowboys and cattle than any of Minnesota's 10,000+ other lakes.
August 17, 2000 - MPR’s Annie Feidt reports on a local team of adventure-enthusiasts competing in the Eco-Challenge held in Sabah, Malaysia. The four members of team Northstar have spent months preparing to endure the 300-mile race that will test their skills in jungle trekking, river paddling, sailing, scuba diving, caving and mountain biking.
August 17, 2000 - Emotions ran high last night as 40 citizens addressed a city council hearing on police conduct during last month's animal genetics conference. During the three hour-hearing, people who were involved in the protests against the conference or who were just observers railed against the police department, the chief and the city council over the conduct of officers and the cost of the operation.
August 24, 2000 - A swan song of summer gets underway as the 2000 edition of the Minnesota State Fair opens at the grounds in Falcon Heights. The popularity of the fair can make transportation and parking a challenge in the area for the next twelve days, but some visitors and exhibitors avoid traffic headaches by camping at the fair.
August 25, 2000 - MPR’s Michael Khoo reports on the “art” of politics at the State Fair. Khoo interviews stops by various campaign booths and interviews various candidates, staffers and fairgoers. Includes excerpts from Mark Dayton, Mike Ciresi, and Rod Grams among others.
August 28, 2000 - The four major DFL Senate candidates squared off at the State Fair in one of the few remaining opportunities for them to try to distinguish themselves before the September 12th primary. Only a handful of differences emerged, and the four seem more willing to attack Republican Senator Rod Grams than each other, despite the fact that one of them has emerged as the leader in the race.
August 29, 2000 - MPR’s Brandt Williams gets a tour of “The Electric Bus,” a portable sampler of Seattle's 240 million dollar interactive museum called the Experience Music Project. Inside the exhibit visitors can get a history lesson or play around with some high-tech toys.
September 1, 2000 - MPR’s Tom Scheck reports on how the veneer of civility disappeared as four DFL candidates for the U.S. senate tore into each other at a Minnesota State Fair debate. The campaign had been relatively quiet, but in an effort to distance herself from the other candidates, Rebecca Yanisch attacked the two frontrunners on gun control and a campaign that has seen little fireworks erupted into finger pointing and accusations.
September 4, 2000 - Mainstreet Radio's Tim Post profiles The Minnesota Fishing Museum in Little Falls, Minnesota. In the land of 10,000 lakes, a few things are sacred. And here, where rods and reels can become almost a personal appendage, there's a shrine to the past time. The museum boasts antique rods, reels, lures and boats along with generations of fish stories. But the museum founders Al Baert and Morry Sauve say this is not a typical museum, it's focus is on the people.
