April 15, 1998 - Even with thousands of job losses, we hear a lot about the high tech worker shortage; that there isn't a qualified workforce to support the growing information technology industry. Not everyone believes it. Norman Matloff at the University of California-Davis is one of them. He says software companies only hire about 2-percent of the people who apply and that the cry of a labor shortage is a way to get cheaper labor.
April 15, 1998 - Last-minute tax filers in Saint Paul can flip on the TV tonight to see what kind of line awaits them at the downtown post office. The Saint Paul Neighborhood Network will do it's good deed once again this year by aiming it's cameras at the post office from nine to midnight. If you've already mailed your taxes, you can take in the latest spectator sport, watching OTHER people mail their taxes. April 16, 1998 - Governor Arne Carlson is calling lawmakers BACK to the state capitol on Monday morning for what he hopes will be a brief special session. Right before the regular session adjourned last week, the House refused to change a law to benefit the Marvin Windows & Doors company... and Carlson now says he wants the House to take that vote again. Minnesota Public Radio's Martin Kaste joins us from our Capitol Bureau.
April 17, 1998 - The Wolf Management Roundtable held its first meeting today in St. Cloud. The group is charged with developing a plan for managing Minnesota's wolf population. Wolves are expected to soon be taken off the Endangered Species list by the federal government, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to be ready with the plan. Minnesota Public Radio's Gretchen Lehmann was at the meeting and joins us now.
April 20, 1998 - U.S. Attorney David Lillehaug discusses his ideas to reduce crime in the highest-crime Minneapolis neighborhoods, including the Phillips neighborhood. Lillehaug also answers listener questions.
April 20, 1998 - Angry residents along Park Avenue in Minneapolis ' Phillips want city officials to roust drug users from a neighborhood apartment building. Residents believe drug users took an elderly resident of the building hostage last week and killed her. The tragedy has demoralized many residents who see it as a continuation of the crime that has afflicted the city's poorest neighborhood for years.
