June 28, 1997 - While the threat of flooding in for most of Northwestern Minnesota has diminished for this year, residents of one area are still living in fear of rising water. The community of Devils Lake is threatened by the body of water it's named after, and that threat continues to grow.
June 30, 1997 - Minnesota's population of people from Somalia is small but growing fast. The number has more than doubled in the past two years to about 8000. The attraction is the state's booming economy. But unlike some other economic migrants many of the Somali's arrive as refugees with no money and little English. What they find is a climate and culture vastly different from their homeland.
July 2, 1997 - MPR’s Laura McCallum reports on the clean-up effort underway in Monticello. A major storm front carved a 15-mile path of destruction through Wright County, downing trees and power lines.
July 3, 1997 - MPR’s Bill Wareham reports that local officials expect cleanup from the July 1st storm to last weeks, as several of the city's schools sustained heavy damage. One of the most damaged was Edison High School in Northeast community of Minneapolis.
July 5, 1997 - It was the bite felt 'round the world. You've probably seen the gruesome video of boxer Mike Tyson taking bites out Evander Holyfield's ears. Mike Tyson is under temporary suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and faces a more permanent ban when the commission meets next week.
July 12, 1997 - In sports news: Alison Nicholas leads the US Women's Open at the halfway mark. The British golfer stands at 6-under-par after shooting a 5-under 66 on Friday. Larry Gilbert leads Jack Nicklaus by one stroke halfway through the Senior Players Championship. Nicklaus shot a 5-under 67 to move into contention. John Jacobs is two off the lead. Golf is a sport that's perhaps more known for it's players---rather than it's fans. (After all--when was the last time you saw a fan wearing a foam cheese wedge on their heads on a fairway!?)
July 13, 1997 - The pictures of the planet Mars sent by Pathfinder have captivated attention here on Earth. One researcher says another mission now heading to Mars will really "wow" amateurs and scientists alike.
July 18, 1997 - Midday features a special report on teen curfews, with a follow up discussion with guests Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman in the St. Paul studios; and in MPR's Collegeville bureau, Sherry Smolik, coordinator of the St. Cloud Area Violence Prevention Council. The guests also answer listener call-in questions.
July 19, 1997 -
July 25, 1997 - Police say six years ago, there were eight so-called saunas and health clubs operating illegally in Saint Paul. Lee Lenore's was the last one. But in Minneapolis , some are still some neighborhood saunas up and running, in addition to legal strip joints and dirty book and video stores. Such businesses are intentionally confined to the Warehouse district downtown. The city council is considering new laws designed to address both the illegal and the legal sex industry. For details, we called Minneapolis City Councilmember Joe Biernat and the commander of Saint Paul's vice unit, Lieutenant Richard Iffert, who explained exactly what goes on in these places.
