September 3, 1996 - Nearly 80 billion pounds of plastic are produced each year in the United States, more than triple the amount produced 20 years ago. To counter the concerns of environmentalists, the plastic industry has mounted an agressive campaign to promote plastic recycling. Technically, all types of plastic are recyclable, but the concept of plastic recycling is often quite different from the reality.
September 3, 1996 - Today was the first day of the 1996-97 school year. It also marked the first day of high school for the "Class of 2000." In four years today's 14 and 15 year old ninth graders will graduate at the beginning of the 21st century. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik spent the day at a new school to to find out what the school of the future looks like AND what kind of education the class of 2000 will end up getting.

September 10, 1996 - Staff at Milkweed Editions , the Minneapolis-based publishing house got quite a shock last year. They donated a thousand children's books to Twin Cities fourth and fifth graders, only to discover that the children couldn't read the books. Many were three grade levels behind in their reading. And so in what might be a natural for a publisher, Milkweed got into the business of promoting literacy. But as Mary Stucky reports, they've taken an approach that's unique in the nation.
