They weren't allowed to mention Republican candidate Norm Coleman, so they criticized frontrunner Skip Humphrey on his tax cut plan, abortion and stadium funding. The five agree on many issues - they support tax cuts, more spending on education and health care, and the need to end Northwest Airlines' dominance in Minnesota. September 9, 1998 - (For Wed. M.E.) The year-round school movement is picking up speed in Saint Paul. Saint Paul and five suburban districts opened a new year-round middle school yesterday. Most of the students came from two existing year-round elementary schools. Another year-round elementary is scheduled to open in Saint Paul next fall. Parents are pushing for the schools because they say they're convinced the alternative calendar means better education for their children. Minnesota Public Radio's Tim Pugmire reports... Students at Interdistrict Middle School take turns climbing a step ladder to pour cups of various-sized rocks into a long plastic tube. When it's finished, the tube will decorate the school hallways. But DNR officials say they sometimes have difficulty communicating with immigrants who don't speak English. As a result, the DNR is training the state's first Asian conservation officers. September 10, 1998 - (old for morning. Just duping for archive purposes!) The striking Northwest pilots are reportedly considering a contract proprosal that could end the 13 day old strike. The Star-Tribune newspaper is reporting the PILOT'S UNION MASTER EXECUTIVE COUNCIL could vote on the package WITHIN A FEW DAYS. There's still a news blackout on the talks going on now at a Plymouth hotel. Northwest's regional partner, Mesaba, is resisting a Department of Transportation order to resume flights despite a lawsuit filed by the D-O-T in federal court yesterday. Today Northwest filed an emergency motion to stay the order. Mesaba spokesman Warren Wilkinson says the commuter airline can't justify renewing service for the small number of customers expected to use it while Northwest pilots are still on strike.
