April 27, 2001 - The Minnesota Nurses Association and 13 Twin Cities Hospitals are negotiating new contracts for nearly 9 thousand nurses. The current contract is up on May 31st and both sides say they need to create a system that will attract and keep nurses in the field. The nursing union says a shortage of nurses has increased workloads , causing some to retire and others to seek new jobs. They say local hospitals have to increase pay levels dramatically to keep nurses working. Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck reports...
April 27, 2001 - A bill suggests that colleges would charge high schools for underprepared students because the school needs to spend money on facilitating remedial classes that do not count toward student tracks. Exceptions include if the student is ESL or if they transferred to the high school during junior year or later.
April 30, 2001 - Hundreds of illegal immigrants in Minnesota are arriving at the Immigration and Naturalization Services Offices in Bloomington today. They're part of a nationwide rush to beat a midnight deadline for a special law that permits them to apply for permanent residency -- without first going back to their home country. May 2, 2001 - Former Minnesota Congressman Tim Penny is one of seven Democrats President Bush appointed today to his Social Security study commission. The commission will release a report this fall outlining recommendations for avoiding a deficit in the program. The President has proposed letting younger workers voluntarily invest some of their payroll taxes in private accounts. Penny also supports partial privitization and says he is happy to be on the commission:

May 4, 2001 - The Republican-controlled House is proposing to cut funding from a program that investigates citizen complaints against law enforcement agencies. The cuts are at odds with both Governor Ventura and the Senate, which recommend fully funding the program. Minnesota Public Radio's Helms reports.
