August 23, 2010 - One of the iconic images of Lake Superior's North Shore is no more. MPR’s Bob Kelleher reports that a rock bridge known as a sea arch on the shoreline in Tettegouche State Park has collapsed, leaving behind a tree-covered stone pillar isolated in the lake.
August 28, 2010 - Minnesota 8th District Congressman James Oberstar was in Hoyt Lakes today to push for faster completion of the environmental review for a proposed copper-nickel mine. Stephanie Hemphill reports.
September 16, 2010 - On this Midday program, Ben Santer, research scientist at Program for Climate Model Diagnosis & and Intercomparison at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California; and Doug Kluck, central region manager for NOAA Climate Services, forecast the changes in natural resources, weather, and animal/human activities that might be needed to adapt to a changing climate.
September 16, 2010 - Morning Edition’s Cathy Wurzer talks with Mike Link, as he and Kate Crowley near their completion of walking the shoreline of Lake Superior. The Minnesota couple spent five months traversing the nearly 1,600 miles of the lake’s shoreline, which ends as they near Canal Park in Duluth. They will be the first people in recorded history to accomplish that feat.
November 8, 2010 - MPR’s Stephanie Hemphill looks into a microscopic organism in Lake Superior that lives peacefully on the rocky shore. But this same algae is causing big problems in some other streams around the world, notably in New Zealand and New England. It's a bit of a mystery that a handful of scientists are racing to solve.
December 2, 2010 - MPR’s Stephanie Hemphill reports that Congress has passed a bill designed to prevent importation of Asian carp. Minnesota U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar co-sponsored the bill.
December 18, 2010 - Betsy Daub, from environmental group Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, criticizes lawsuit filed by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce against the Pollution Control Agency. Daub says it's an attempt to weaken environmental protections. The Chamber says a state rule governing sulfate pollution in wild rice waters is out of date and is not based on good science.
December 23, 2010 - MPR’s Kate Smith interviews author Greg Breining and photographer Layne Kennedy about their book “Paddle North,” which explores the Quetico-Boundary Waters. The two discusse the method, madness and philosophy of paddling Minnesota's big lakes and small streams.
September 14, 2011 - MPR’s Dan Kraker reports on the Pagami Creek Fire in the BWCA and National Superior Forest. Segment includes comments from forestry official and local residents impacted by the the fire.
September 15, 2011 - The Pagami Creek fire is the biggest fire the Boundary Waters have seen in more than a century...but historically, big forest fires used to be commonplace in that area. MPR’s Cathy Wurzer interviews Lee Frelich, forest ecologist at the University of Minnesota, about the positive nature fire can offer, and the impact of climate change in the increase of fires.
