June 10, 2003 - Today is the last day of the regular school year in Minneapolis... but school officials want to get the word out that it's not too late to sign up for summer school. Earlier this year... it was announced that budget cuts would limit summer school to all but the neediest students. But after the community responded with worries of what children would do all summer... and after finding some money in the budget... officials decided to offer summer school to more kids. June 12, 2003 - The number of teacher layoffs in the Minneapolis school district continues to grow. Union leaders say pink slips have now been issued to 464 teachers with less than four years experience. Another 98 veteran teachers are also in danger of losing their jobs. The layoffs are part of the district's effort to solve a nearly 30-million dollar budget shortfall. Minnesota Public Radio's Tim Pugmire reports...
June 12, 2003 - Students from around the world are expected to come to Hamline University this fall... but NOT to attend college. Hamline is recruiting the students to attend a new private high school that the University is setting up on its campus. It's called the Hamline International School... and it's already getting applicants from Russia... South Korea... and Columbia. High school students in Minnesota are also encouraged to apply. June 13, 2003 - The University heads into its 2004 fiscal year July 1st, looking for ways to manage a significant hit to its base funding from the state. University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks says solving the budget challenges will mean sacrifices from every corner of the institution. From layoffs to tuition increases, Bruininks spelled out his recommended 2004 operating budget today Helms reports.
June 16, 2003 - Tomorrow night, the Minneapolis Public Library Board will hold the first in a series of public meetings about proposed service cuts. The library system will need to cut 20 percent from its budget next year, due in part to the Legislature's decision to reduce Local Government Aid... and library officials want input from the public. June 23, 2003 - A full schedule of summer school classes got underway today in Minneapolis , just two months after district leaders debated whether they could afford a summer term. Officials in the state's largest school district had briefly considered cutting summer school down to a bare minimum due to tight finances. They later abandoned those plans due to concerns over the potential impact on test scores.
June 24, 2003 - When the MnSCU Board of Trustees meets in July, tuition increases will be on the agenda. All 33 institutions of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system are asking for tuition hikes. If approved, MnSCU's full-time students will see their average costs rise about $400 dollars a year. Students would pay more than $3500 a year in tuition and fees. Mainstreet Radio's Bob Reha reports.
