July 8, 2003 - Fridley-based Medtronic announced it has received the FDA's blessing to market what it calls an "intelligent" insulin pump and glucose monitoring system. The new system combines a Medtronic MiniMed insulin pump with a glucose monitor from Becton Dickinson to check blood sugar, calculate the insulin needed and signal an implanted pump to send the right dose. Jeff McCaulley is Vice President and General Manager of Medtronic's Mini-Med division. He says the new device could transform the lives of the estimated four million diabetics who depend on insulin to regulate their blood sugar.
July 9, 2003 - Get ready for a light rail rerun. A controversy similar to the one over building the Hiawatha light rail line is brewing in the southwest suburbs. Proponents will likely recommend today Wednesday that planning proceed on a light rail line from downtown Minneapolis to Eden Prairie. Opponents say light rail is too expensive compared to the alternatives. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.

July 15, 2003 - Several Minnesota business leaders told a top U.S. trade official yesterday Mon that they could use more help from Washington. U.S. Undersecretary for International Trade, Grant Aldonas, is touring the country to hear from American manufacturers. In Minnesota, many believe the present and future of manufacturing are tied to medical devices and biotechnology. But six leaders in the field told Aldonas the government is not always giving them the support they need. Minnesota Public Radio's Jeff Horwich reports.

July 17, 2003 - . Three landowners in Washington County will be honored today for their efforts to protect open spaces in the Twin Cities area. They will receive awards from the McKnight Foundation, which wants to raise awareness about threats to natural areas. One of the awards will go to David Hartwell, on behalf of his family. Hartwell is the grandson of Charlie Bell and the president of Belwin, a nonprofit organization set up by the Bell family to protect open space in the Afton area. Hartwell says it all started when his grandparents bought a weekend retreat near Afton.
July 17, 2003 - (On paper, Northwest made money over the last three months. But executives say in reality the airline experienced one of the worst performances in company history.
July 18, 2003 - Governor Tim Pawlenty today (FRIDAY) sought to defuse some of the criticisms directed at his business history. On his weekly radio program and during a Minneapolis speech, the governor deflected questions about his ties to a telecommunications firm that's been penalized in three states. But Pawlenty's political opponents says the governor's answers outline a pattern of playing loose with the rules. Minnesota Public Radio's Michael Khoo reports.
