September 3, 1999 - MPR’s Dan Gunderson reports on the International Plowing Competition in Rollag, Minnesota. Farmers from 30 states are competing for the national plowing title. The event is part of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion.
September 7, 1999 - MPR’s Bill Wareham reviews the Mill City Music Festival, which for the first time, had an “all local” line-up. Wareham discusses perfomance highlights, including Prince, Sugar, Jack McDuff, and Slim Dunlap.
September 9, 1999 - MPR’s Michael Choo reports on a new Hmong-language radio program that premiered on WMIN Radio Rey in St. Paul. The variety show features Hmong music and news from both Laos and the Twin Cities region. Backers of the show say the estimated 75-thousand Hmong living in the metro area represent an under-served market with significant economic potential.
September 20, 1999 - The Minnesota Vikings stumbled yesterday, losing their home opener to the Oakland Raiders 22 to 17. Players and coaches seemed to shrug off the loss, but many fans were clearly upset by the team's performance.
September 21, 1999 - MPR’s Lorna Benson talks with nature photographer Jim Brandenburg about the the Boundary Waters after the massive blowdown. Brandenburg discusses the unknown long-term effects to the forest and animals.
September 22, 1999 - The accordian is seldom seen as cutting edge. For many it's an instrument deeply rooted in the past. But for a North Dakotan Family living just west of Bismark the accordian is a passport to the future... which has taken its members all over the country, and now they are looking to make their fortune with their accordians at home.
September 24, 1999 - September edition of MPR's Voices of Minnesota series, featuring St. John's University football coach John Gagliardi and music arranger Red McLeod (he arranged the Minnesota Rouser as a student, arranged 1812 overture for U of M band for conductor Eugene Ormandy, wrote for Whoopee John polka band).
September 27, 1999 - To close out the millennium, Minnesota Public Radio's All Things Considered presents a look back at Minnesota life in 1900 via a 12-part series, entitled “A Minnesota Century.” This segment is the the story of a woman who had mixed success as a novelist but eventually found her voice in the character of Betsy, whose antics and adventures mirrored Maud's real-life childhood in Mankato at the turn of the century.
September 27, 1999 - You don't have to get up at three in the morning and squeeze into a pair of long johns to go deer hunting anymore. Hunters are now stalking deer and other animals on their computers. As Minnesota Public Radio's Jon Gordon reports, a Twin Cities software company leads the way in virtual hunting and fishing.
