April 5, 2004 - Republican women who hold statewide office and serve in the Legislature today (MONDAY) urged Senate Democrats to confirm two of Governor Pawlenty's commissioners. They say Senate DFLers are playing politics with the confirmations of Lieutenant Governor and Transportation Commissioner Carol Molnau, and Education Commissioner Cheri Pierson Yecke. They also questioned whether gender is a factor. Senate DFL leaders say the issue isn't gender, but rather the Pawlenty administration's policies. Minnesota Public Radio's Laura McCallum reports...
April 5, 2004 - General Manager Terry Ryan gives an appraisal of The Minnesota Twins as they open 2004 Major League Baseball season with a home game against the Cleveland Indians. During the off-season, the Twins lost key players through free agency and traded others to cut payroll. Ryan says he doesn't think the roster changes will stop the Twins from winning a third straight division title.
April 7, 2004 - CATHY Three Minnesotans and a Minnesota organization will be honored tonight at the 8th annual Ann Bancroft Awards, which recognize the achievements of girls and women. One of the winners is a 17-year-old African-American student. Tsione Wolde-Michael (see OWN wold --like mold-- michael) is the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants. She attends Totino-Grace High School in Fridley... where she's worked to promote tolerance and fight discrimination. Wolde-Michael founded the school's first Diversity Club. Last year, she was chosen to spend a summer at Yale as part of the "Junior Statesmen of America Program." Tsione Wolde-Michael says after she arrived at Totino Grace... she had second-thoughts about staying there.
April 7, 2004 - Morning Edition’s Cathy Wurzer interviews Republican Representative Marty Siefert about legislation that would require drivers license tests be given only in English. The change was proposed as an amendment to a larger transportation bill. Currently, the written portion of the Minnesota drivers license exam is given in several languages, including Hmong, Somali, and Spanish.
April 16, 2004 - Hour 2 of Midday: A Voices of Minnesota broadcast with two remarkable women. Sabina Zimering, a Polish Jew, survived the Holocaust during World War II while literally working under the noses of the Gestapo. She wrote a book about her experiences, and now it's a play at the Great American History Theatre in St. Paul. Also, Hyun Sook Han, who survived the Japanese occupation of Korea during World War II and lived through the Korean War as well. She's a retired children's home society social worker, and she'll be honored on April 29th and May 1st for her work.
