October 17, 2002 - Incumbent Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone and Republican challenger Norm Coleman are locked in a close race for the U.S. Senate. The race, like 33 others all across the country, could be the one that tips the balance of power in the Senate, which now has 50 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and 1 Independent who usually votes with the Democrats. Wellstone and Coleman, are joined in the race by the Independence Party's Jim Moore, and the Green Party's Ray Tricomo. October 22, 2002 - The 2002 elections are just two weeks away, and the T-V airwaves are full of political ads. Some are paid for by the candidate's campaigns, but others are paid for by political parties or issue groups that want to influence elections in Minnesota. Many of the ads concern the Senate race between incumbent Democrat Paul Wellstone, and his main challenger, Republican Norm Coleman. If you watch the ads closely, many will end with a tag-line, and a phone number flashed across the screen. Many political ads tell viewers to call or contact a candidate. That's one of the political advertising trends that Debra Goldberg is following. She is the deputy director of the Brennan Center for Justice and she joins us now.
