Weekend Edition (Regional Edition) is an MPR News segment series that runs as a companion to broadcasts of NPR’s Weekend Edition. As a regional version, the series highlights local news, commentary, profiles, and reports.
October 24, 1987 - MPR’s Mark Heistad reports on "Kinder Koncert," a Minnesota Orchestra performance focused on bringing classical music to children. Reports features interviews with musicians Adele Lorraine and Edward Stack; and composer Dan Sturm on the premiere of his composition, "The Grandfather Tree".
May 7, 1988 - Weekend Edition’s Mark Heistad gets commentary from sports analyst Jay Weiner about the Minnesota Twins 1988 lack-luster season after first month and the release of relief pitcher Joe Niekro.
May 14, 1988 - With the fishing opener arriving in Minnesota, Mainstreet Radio’s Rachel Reabe visits Perch Lake near Brainerd to profile Al Lindner, a professional fisherman who has made quite the splash in the business of fishing.
January 7, 1989 - Susan Williams provides a review of "Killing Time in Saint Cloud" by Judith Guest and Rebecca Hill. The book is a crime novel about a family who moves to St. Cloud, Minnesota, after the death of their mother.
June 16, 1990 - Weekend Edition’s sports commentator Jay Weiner, of the Star Tribune, describes a rough situation on-and-off the field for the Minnesota Twins, who have won 2 of the last 13 games. Weiner says while things are bad for the team, it is still not “1982 bad.”
August 18, 1990 - MPR’s Mark Heistad talks with Evelyn Fairbanks, author of the book “Days of Rondo.” Fairbanks reflects on growing up in the Rondo neighborhood of St. Paul.
December 30, 1990 - Mainstreet Radio’s Leif Enger reports from the northern border town of International Falls, as Boise Cascade, the city's largest employer, finishes up a huge expansion of their papermill. The development, which utilized non-union workers, caused bitter feelings in the town. In 1989, 500 union supporters rioted in International Falls after Boise Cascade brought in the thousands of non-union workers to do it. The town was divided as local businesses flourished with increase of people, but union workers and their families were left feeling betrayed.
October 19, 1991 - On this Weekend Edition report, MPR’s Bill Wareham highlights the Atlanta Braves. For many Braves players, this will be the first experience playing in the Metrodome and dealing with its unique oddities as a ballpark. The Braves will represent the National League in the 1991 World Series against the American League’s Minnesota Twins.
October 26, 1991 - Weekend Edition host Jim Wishner talks with sports commentator Jay Weiner about how the 1991 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves may conclude.
November 2, 1991 - Weekend Edition host Jim Wishner talks with sports commentator Jay Weiner about various sports items in relation to the snow, including the Twins World Series win, Winter Olympics, and the roof of Metrodome (hmmmmmmm..)
