MPR Journal was a daily half-hour regional news program, hosted by Gary Eichten, airing from 1984 until 1991. The program was initially titled Minnesota Journal, but in early 1985 changed to MPR Journal.
August 8, 1985 - Robert Collins reviews James Cada’s stage play, Old Explorers, a gentle wistful comedy about two widowers and their odd but enriching fantasy life.
September 4, 1985 - MPR’s Stephen Smith reports on Arne Carlson’s announcement in bid for governor’s office in 1986. Carlson, Minnesota’s state auditor and longtime Republican, is known for his perceived centrist views and tough temperament.
September 24, 1985 - MPR Journal host Gary Eichten presents a collection of reports and news items for Tuesday, September 24th, 1985.
September 30, 1985 - Evelina Chao, an American violinist of Chinese descent and member of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, talks about writing her novel Gates of Grace, which tells the story of the emigrate Chinese experience in America.
October 22, 1985 - MPR’s Stephen Smith chats with author and journalist Paul Gruchow about the season of autumn. In segment, Gruchow reads from his first book, Journal of a Prairie Year.
December 26, 1985 - Reviewer Robert Collins reviews two small plays being staged in the Twin Cities…Driving Around the House by Patrick Smith at Brass Tacks Theater; and Harry and Claire by Jaime Meyer at Quicksilver Stage.
January 20, 1986 - MPR Journal’s Gary Eichten gets multiple reports on the status of Hormel strike situation in Austin. Striking meatpackers have amassed at gates of Hormel plant in order to disrupt. The company and city have requested the National Guard.
January 23, 1986 - MPR Journal’s Gary Eichten interviews Paul Karas, an airline industry analyst, about Northwest Airlines acquiring Republic Airways. The deal would make Northwest the third largest airline.
January 27, 1986 - MPR Journal’s Gary Eichten interviews Rick Majerus, Marquette University men’s basketball coach, about the state of college sports. Majerus shares his views on negative impact of money in Division 1 basketball, adjustment players make in balancing sport and school, and freshman eligibility.
January 30, 1986 - MPR Journal’s Gary Eichten gets commentary from MPR sports commentator J.G. Preston about how the Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team will close out season after three Minnesota players were arrested on sexual assault charges in Madison, Wisconsin.
