January 31, 2001 - MPR’s Laura McCullum reports on the Minnesota Twins latest effort to find support for a stadium plan at the State Capitol. This time, team officials are taking a go-slow approach, listening to legislators and floating ideas. Some lawmakers are warming to one idea that doesn't involve a direct taxpayer subsidy, but they say funding a new ballpark won't be a top priority during a busy budget session.
January 31, 2001 - Governor Ventura took his budget proposal for the University of Minnesota to the editorial page of the Star Tribune today. His piece, titled "Maybe Money Isn't the 'U' Problem," suggests the University could get by with fewer resources. The Governor's budget plan calls for a $56-million increase in U of M funding while the University has asked for almost four times that. Richard Pfutzenreuter (fitz-en-roy-ter) is Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of the University of Minnesota. He takes issue with the governor's strategy of comparing the U of M to the University of Wisconsin, which Ventura says enjoys a higher research ranking even though it pays its professors less than Minnesota.
February 1, 2001 - Governor Jesse Ventura is defending the health care plan he proposed in his two-year budget. State lawmakers and health advocacy groups have criticized Ventura for not spending enough money on long-term care, the University of Minnesota's Academic Health Center and health insurance for children. February 1, 2001 - Small towns all across Minnesota are trying to attract businesses to provide jobs for workers. In Cook County on the North Shore of Lake Superior, businesses are thriving but there aren't enough places for the workers to live. It's a problem that plagues many resort areas, and people in Cook County are coming up with some innovative solutions. Minnesota Public Radio's Stephanie Hemphill has the third in a series of reports about growth along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
February 1, 2001 - What could lead a parent to kill a child? Dutch author Renate Dorrestein tries to answer that chilling question in her new novel "A Heart of Stone" The book centers on Ellen, whose mother murdered Ellen's father and siblings before killing herself. Ellen struggles to understand why her mother committed such a horrendous act and why she alone was spared. Dorrestein told Minnesota Public Radio's Stephanie Curtis she was inspired to write the novel four years ago, when a series of murder-suicides within families shocked the Netherlands. She says most of the cases involved husbands and wives caught in bad divorces or violent arguments, but one stood out from the others.
February 1, 2001 - Activist, author and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader spoke to students at St Cloud State University last night (Wednesday). Nader spent two hours criticizing the government, corporations and what he says are American's "low expectations" for their country. Minnesota Public Radio's Tim Post reports.
February 1, 2001 - The National Mediation Board adjourned talks between Northwest Airlines and its mechanics union on Wednesday, but the Airline Mechanics Fraternal Association made a last ditch contract offer in an effort to avert a possible strike. The board's next step may be to release the mechanics from negotiations. That would set off a 30-day cooling off period before either side could initiate a job action. Minnesota Public Radio's Andrew Haeg reports.

February 2, 2001 - The Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport is expected to reach capacity in less than two decades. That growing crunch for space prompted the mayors of Minneapolis and Rochester to host an afternoon tour of the Rochester International Airport. The intent - to drum up support for a high speed rail link that would shuffle twin cities air traffic through Rochester. Minnesota Public Radio's Erin Galbally reports:
