December 27, 2000 - There are just a few days left to make year-end tax moves to save some money. This year, the stock market started off red-hot, but it looks like most stock indexes will be down for the year. And for those of you who bought a house, had a child, or got a big raise, your tax status may have changed. Ed Slott, editor of Ed Slott's IRA Advisor, says if you pay off your credit card every month, you can use it to charge medical expenses and charitable contributions that you can deduct from this year's taxes.
December 27, 2000 - The Minnesota legislature will consider a 12-million dollar aid package for the city of Granite Falls when it convenes next month. An F-4 tornado hit the town in southwest Minnesota five months ago; only the most recent disaster the town has endured. The rebuilding continues even as subzero weather sets in. December 27, 2000 - Remember your census form? The first results from the national headcount should arrive this week. Those numbers and the data that follow will lay the groundwork for a once-in-a-decade political battle. State lawmakers will examine hundreds of thousands of census blocks next year, all part of redrawing legislative and congressional boundaries to match shifting populations. Drawing a map is the easy part, but since the new districts will affect the balance of political power until 2010, drawing a map that all parties can accept may take years. December 27, 2000 - Future Tense for December 27th looks at shopping bots. One of the most sought-after items this holiday season is the Sony PlayStation 2, the powerful game console that's been in short supply. Some of those lucky enough to find PS2s did so with shopping bots, software that crawls through the Web looking for product availability and price. Shopping bots allow consumers to comparison shop and hunt for bargains; they can cover more ground than a human shopper. Carrie Johnson with Forrester Research says bots are beginning to make their presence felt.

December 27, 2000 - Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in certain populations. Hispanics, African Americans and Native Americans have the highest incidence of diabetes in the country. And it's on the rise. But so is awareness of the disease. Diabetes prevention programs are emerging from within these communities. Mainstreet Radio's Marisa Helms reports on how members of Minnesota's White Earth reservation are approaching the problem.
December 27, 2000 - To find out more about what's fueling all these mergers Minnesota Public Radion news talked with Mark Sirower. He's a mergers and acquisitions specialist at the Boston Consulting Group and a visiting professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. Sirower says 20 years of academic research shows that 65 percent of mergers don't create value for the aquiring company, while 35 percent do. So if the odds are against a successful merger, why do so many companies walk down the aisle? Sirower says even a bad deal might not be so bad.
December 28, 2000 - When lawmakers gather at the Capitol for the 2001 session, their main purpose is to pass a two-year state budget. Governor Jesse Ventura will reveal his budget in late January, a budget he's spent months preparing.
