December 7, 2000 - The University of Minnesota Women's Volleyball team is in Honolulu, Hawai'i preparing for tonight's game against Cal State-Santa Barbara. The Gophers are competing in the N-C double-A regional semifinals. That's the eqivalent of basketball's sweet sixteen. It's the fourth time in school history they've made it this far, but they've never advanced to the final eight. Pam Schmid covers Gopher volleyball for the Star Tribune. She talked about the team with Minnesota Public Radio's Jim Bickal.
December 7, 2000 - L-T-V Corporation is closing a Minnesota iron mining operation earlier than expected. The Cleveland-based company says its L-T-V Steel Mining Company located in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota will close February 24th. L-T-V had planned to keep it open through the middle of next year. L-T-V says the mine can no longer provide it with taconite pellets of competitive quality and cost. This is the latest in a series of recent setbacks to Minnesota's iron mining industry. Ann Glumac is the President of the Minnesota Iron Mining Association. She says the health of the industry in Minnesota is directly tied to the health of the U-S steel industry.

December 7, 2000 - Minnesota-based Best Buy today announced major expansion plans that will significantly extend its reach into U.S. and Canadian markets. Best Buys plans to purchase Music Land, in a deal valued at nearly 700-million dollars. It also plans to buy Seattle-based Magnolia Hi-Fi for about 90-millions dollars. Shakespeare's "Cymbeline" is performed Ten Thousand Things Theater Company to people who don't usually see productions, such as prisoners. Surf-cracker is a spin of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" at the Loring Playhouse.

December 8, 2000 - General Mills shareholders overwhelmingly approved the company's plans to buy Pillsbury from London-based Diageo (dee-AHZH-ee-oh). Combining the two oldline Minneapolis firms will produce the nation's third largest food company, with combined revenues of roughly 13 billion dollars. While most analysts think the merger makes sense, some are still worried General Mills is making a risky bet. Minnesota Public Radio's Andrew Haeg reports.
