October 12, 2000 - Studies show Diabetes strikes Hispanics at twice the rate it affects the general U.S. population. For migrant farm workers with no health insurance and no regular doctor, identifying and treating diabetes is often difficult. Now, Migrant health workers in Minnesota and North Dakota are starting a new project they hope will save lives. Public Health workers are meeting in Moorhead this week to learn more. October 12, 2000 - President Clinton is calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Middle East after Israeli helicopter gunships attacked Palestinian targets today in retaliation for the beating deaths of two Israeli soldiers. One man who believes peace is still possible in the Middle East is David Malone, President of the International Peace Academy. He is in the Twin Cities today to speak at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs about peace making around the globe. Malone says it will probably be a few more days before the violence stops.

October 12, 2000 - A bill that would increase protection for women and children who are victims of international sex trafficking is headed to president Clinton after passing in the Senate yesterday. The CIA estimates that as many as 50,000 women and children who enter the United States illegally each year are forced to work as prostitutes, forced laborers, and servants. This legislation has been a priority for Senator Paul Wellstone. He says his wife Shelia deserves credit for getting the bill through Congress.

The state's new team, the Minnesota Wild, skated to a three-to-three tie with the Philadelphia Flyers last night in the first home game of their young history. Hockey fans filled Saint Paul's new arena and cheered an NHL team for the first time since Norm Green moved the North Stars south. Fire experts consider controlled burn just the first of many more to come in and near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
