September 28, 2000 - Two polls released today agree on one thing, DFLer Mark Dayton is leading Republican Rod Grams in Minnesota's US senate race. But the polls don't agree on how wide Dayton's lead is. The Pioneer Press/Minnesota Public Radio poll shows Dayton with 46% of the vote compared to 41% for Grams, while a Star Tribune poll widen's Dayton's lead to 14 percentage points with 49 percent of the vote compared with 35 percent for Grams. Steve Frank is a former political science professor and co-director of the St Cloud State University Survey, a telephone polling firm that did not produce either of these polls. September 28, 2000 - Dagny Melgren of Norway scored two goals, including the winning goal in overtime to lead Norway to a three to two victory over the United States in women's soccer today at the Olympics. The win earned Norway a gold medal. MPR Sports Commentator Jay Weiner is in Sydney covering the Olympics and was at today's game.
September 28, 2000 - The Minnesota Poll out today shows Dayton leading Grams 49 to 35 percent. In that poll Independence Party candidate Jim Gibson is only supported by three percent of voters. Rick McCluhan chair of Minnesota's Independence Party says Gibson needs to distinguish himself from the other candidates.

September 28, 2000 - Streamlined city budgets and the national trend toward fewer fire emergency responders are among the reasons some Minnesota fire departments are adding more volunteers to their ranks. Mankato, Austin and Winona are the most recent cities to move to what's called a "combination" department. And now the city of Saint Cloud is considering that option with potential savings of a million dollars a year in taxes. But critics say mixing volunteer and career firefighters could put St Cloud residents at risk. Mainstreet Radio's Marisa Helms reports.
September 28, 2000 - The Boy Scouts recieved bad news from 2 places today: Medtronic decided to exclude the group from its United Way donation this year and the United Way of Duluth voted to pull its funding of the Voyaguers Area Council of the Scouts. This is the first United Way in Minnesota to decide against funding the group because of the recent Supreme Court ruling that the Boy Scouts can exclude homosexuals. September 28, 2000 - It's harvest time on Minnesota's farms, and soon many farmers will take one last pass with the tractor to till the soil before winter sets in. But a soil scientist in Morris says the practice of intensive tilling is ruining the state's soil and contributing to green house gasses. He proposes changes, which to some farmers, look like an expensive prospect. Mainstreet Radio's Tim Post reports.
September 28, 2000 - Representatives of more than 100 Native American tribes have been gathering in Saint Paul this week to learn about ways to bring better phone service to their reservations. Federal Communications Commission officials, who are sponsoring the conference, say nearly half of all American Indians on reservations are without basic phone service, let alone access to the Internet. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
