September 22, 2000 - The summer tourist season is over, but thousands of visitors will probably stream through Duluth this weekend. They won't stay in motels or spend any money though, because they're birds. Each fall thousands of hawks and eagles pass through the Duluth sky on their way south. And the passing birds draw a good number of humans to a place called Hawk Ridge. Chris Julin has more from Duluth.

September 22, 2000 - If you've ever wondered what artwork hides in private collections in the Twin Cities, now's your chance to find out. Nearly 200 pieces of art from local collections will be on display in an exhibit opening at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis this weekend. The show is the result of months of searching by a team of Walker researchers, who asked collectors to temporarily share the contents of their living rooms. They found everything from Picassos and Lichtensteins to interesting works by lesser known artists. As the last pictures were going up, Curator Joan Rothfuss (ROTH fuss) told me about how a collection can tell us about its owner.
September 25, 2000 - Rabbi Bernard Raskas has been wrestling with thorny questions of politics and faith for the past fifty years, as a rabbi at St. Paul's Temple of Aaron Congregation, and as a scholar and teacher. A new book entitled "Seasons of the Mind" brings together his collected writings from newspapers around the country. And next month Raskas will be designated "rabbi laureate" by his temple, as only the second rabbi in the country to serve a congregation for fifty years. Minnesota Public Radio's Amy Radil reports.

The Society's Chief Conservator is traveling to towns across the state, and finding enthusiastic audiences. Minnesota Public Radios Dan Gunderson reports.
September 25, 2000 - General Mills says shareholders will vote by the end of the year on management's plans to purchase Pillsbury in a ten and a half BILLION dollar deal. Food industry analysts say despite the enormous price tag, the acquisition would be a move in the right direction. But a former General Mills executive is trying to BLOCK the deal saying it's too risky. General Mills held its annual shareholder's meeting today in Minneapolis. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports...
September 25, 2000 - It's been a century since brewing in La Crosse, Wisconsin was at the top of its game. Since then close to a dozen breweries have folded, and today only one remains. Minnesota Public Radio's Erin Galbally reports that sole survivor, "City Brewery", finds itself in money trouble struggling to stay open.
September 25, 2000 - The Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and epidemiologists throughout the world are calling for more prudent use of antibiotics. Ever since doctors started using penicillin to kill bacterial infections in the 1940's, researchers have worried some bacteria would become resistant to antibiotics. Their fears are now coming true as scientists discover antibiotic resistant germs They say so-called "superbugs" will leave doctors defenseless against some illnesses. Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck has the first of three reports...
September 25, 2000 - While bacteria adapt and become resistant to commonly-prescribed antibiotics, pharmacutical researchers are adapting by coming up with new drugs. One promising new antibiotic called a ketolide could be widely available in the next few years to fight pneumonia and other respiratory diseases. Dr. William Craig, professor of medicine and pharmaceutics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, helped develop the new drug.
