September 11, 2000 - The University of Minnesota is suing the only basketball coach to take the Gophers to the Final Four. The lawsuit against former men's coach Clem Haskins stems from the academic fraud scandal that led the university to dismiss Haskins and several other athletic department officials. Now the university is trying to recover some of the one-and-a-half million dollars paid to Haskins in a contract buyout. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen reports...

September 11, 2000 - The new Bruce Vento Elementary school was dedicated today in Saint Paul. Congressman Vento attended a ceremony at his alma mater, formerly known as East Consolidated, that included songs from the current students and the burial of a time capsule. The legislator plans to retire after 24 years in the U-S Congress to concentrate on his family after finding that he has cancer. Vento gave a speech to thank the school board for the honor of having a school named after him. He also brought some memoribilia.

September 11, 2000 - {For Mon. 9/11 M.E.} A group of national experts hired to review the state's Profile of Learning graduation standards will soon release its findings. The nonprofit organization Achieve Incorporated has been studying Minnesota's standards for several months and comparing them to other states. The report could lead to further changes to Minnesota's controversial show-what-you-know system in the next legislative session. Minnesota Public Radio's Tim Pugmire reports...
September 11, 2000 - Two Republicans are vying for the chance to take on Democratic Congressman Jim Oberstar in Minnesota's 8th district, stretching from the Iron Range down to the northern Twin Cities suburbs. Oberstar has held the seat for 26 years. But so far, much of the Republican attempt to unseat him has centered more on an internal dispute on who should control the party. Minnesota Public Radio's Stephanie Hemphill reports. { The dispute boils down to this. Bob Lemen, a Grand Rapids computer consultant, has the GOP party endorsement. Warren Nelson, an engineering consultant from Chisago County, says the endorsement should have gone to his friend Mike Darling. Darling's candidacy did get a vote of support, but party leaders say it happened at a meeting which was not meant to endorse anyone. Darling is now running as an independent.
September 12, 2000 - A new pest discovered in Minnesota in recent weeks is a significant threat for soybean farmers. An infestation of aphids previously seen only in Asian countries and Austrailia is spreading across the midwest. Farming experts are scrambling to learn what it means for a crop that has so far enjoyed a virtually pest-free existance in the United States. Mainstreet Radio's Art Hughes reports. The state patrol is helping with a survey about drivers' daily travel habits. Kevin Kittridge is the State Patrol's metropolitan area commander. He says drivers are simply flagged over to designated areas.
