August 23, 2000 - Another exotic species is causing concern, this time in the Northeastern part of the state. Curly leaf pond weed has been in Minnesota since the late 1800's but a warm spring has boosted its population on lakes near Biwabik, Minnesota. Wendy Crowell, of the D-N-R's Eurasian water milfoil program, answered questions on the nusiance weed at meeting last night sponsored by the Cedar Island Lake Association. She says curly leaf pond weed has a distinct look:
August 23, 2000 - Federal divers have found a large infestation of zebra mussels on the Saint Croix River. The mussels were discovered last week on the lower end of the river, north of Prescott, Wisconsin. It's the first significant foothold by the mussels in the federally protected river. Jay Rendall is the exotic species program coordinator for the D-N-R. He says the Saint Croix has been considered a high risk location because it is so close to the infested Mississippi:

A commercial created by Minneapolis adman Bill Hillsman for Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader parodies a popular MasterCard ad campaign, and a Fourth District Congressional candidate makes fun of herself in a series of humorous radio ads. August 23, 2000 - With less than two weeks before the first day of school, Minnesota teachers and school officials are busy getting ready for the new year. Many districts are still handling the fallout from grading mistakes on the basic skills tests, and some are scrambling to hire enough teachers before students return on September 5th. St. Paul Superintendent Pat Harvey joins us now, to discuss preparations in that district.
August 23, 2000 - Goodhue County opened the doors of a new, state of the art, jail at the beginning of this year. The county sunk close to 24-million dollars into the sprawling facility, home to the police department, the county court house and the 138-bed jail. After twelve years in the making the Goodhue County jail isn't proving to be the money-maker that some predicted. In fact the jail's not breaking even. Minnesota Public Radio's Erin Galbally has this Mainstreet report. {Goodhue County's law enforcement center is a sprawling structure of fresh concrete in the middle of downtown Red Wing. For months former County Administrator Steve Bloom worked across the street, with a first class view of the county's newest and most expensive public works project. Bloom says officials expect the jail to evolve into a source of revenue.

August 24, 2000 - A swan song of summer gets underway as the 2000 edition of the Minnesota State Fair opens at the grounds in Falcon Heights. The popularity of the fair can make transportation and parking a challenge in the area for the next twelve days, but some visitors and exhibitors avoid traffic headaches by camping at the fair.
