Fast-food giant McDonald's today asked its meat suppliers to phase out the use of antibiotics which promote animal growth. The company is responding to concerns that antibiotics given to animals in feed reduces the effectiveness of antibiotic medicines in humans. The announcement is likely to have a profound effect on beef and pork producers in Minnesota. Jim Quackenbush is a pork producer and serves on the board of the National Pork Producers Council. He says it's the FDA's job to determine if the country's food supply is safe. Quackenbush is concerned the new McDonald's policy is undermining the government's role in policing food quality.
