An MPR Presents broadcast of "Civil War Homecoming," which takes a look back at how Minnesotans experienced the war and its aftermath through stories and song. The event was presented at the Fitzgerald Theater to mark the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

2015 marks 150 years since the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the sesquicentennial of the end of the Civil War, which raged from 1861 to '65. Some 24,000 Minnesotans were soldiers in the Civil War, a war that profoundly changed the nation and the state.

The show was a collaboration of the Minnesota Historical Society, the Civil War Commemoration Task Force and Minnesota Public Radio.

This is part one of two.
