Morning Edition’s Cathy Wurzer interviews Jack Barkla, who since the 1970s, has been responsible for creating the auditorium shows at Dayton’s in downtown Minneapolis. Barkla calls it "conjuring up magic."
For lots of people who grew up in the Twin Cities, it was a holiday tradition each year to go to the Dayton's in downtown Minneapolis to see the Christmas-themed window displays and walk through the elaborate shows in the 8th floor auditorium. A book titled "Dayton's: A Twin Cities Institution" by Kristal Leebrick tells the story of the department store as a community institution. One of the people that author features in the book is Barkla.
