University of St. Thomas law school students and the St. Paul NAACP today unveil a new report on law enforcement efforts to fight street gangs. It calls on police and the state to reform the way they generate and keep intelligence files on suspected gang members. The report is the result of two town hall meetings, a survey and a community panel that followed revelations about the now-defunct Metro Gang Strike Force. Some of the officers from that unit have been accused of misconduct, and the FBI is investigating the strike force for possible illegal activity. Nakima Levy-Pounds directs the Community Justice Project at St. Thomas. She says public concern has focused on two databases that track gang activity.
