Stephanie Hemphill reports on the U.S. Forest Service facing a lawsuit over its plan to log near Trout Lake, just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
STEPHANIE HEMPHILL: The irregular edges of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area nearly surround Trout Lake, West of Ely. The Sierra club's Lois Norgaard says logging 18 square miles there would threaten the wilderness character of the area and would harm wildlife.
LOIS NORGAARD: Not just threaten endangered species, but some of the rare species that rely on unfragmented standing, old growth, and mature forest areas.
STEPHANIE HEMPHILL: Norgaard says the agency is cutting back on the number of species it monitors to track the health of the forest. The Forest Service says it wants to cut old trees in the area to create younger stands of Jack pine. Stephanie Hemphill, Minnesota Public Radio News.
