This week a group of men and women were charged with running seven brothels in the Twin Cities and another in Austin, Minnesota. They forced women from Mexico and Central America into prostitution and took their identification documents to prevent them from fleeing. As Minnesotans grapple with the idea of brothels in their hometowns, the Guthrie opens a new play about human trafficking. As part of a program funded by the Bush foundation, eleven writers were given the opportunity to go anywhere in the world and write a play based on their experience. Playwright Julie Marie Myatt visited Cambodia and studied human trafficking there. Myatt met with people who ran shelters for young women re-entering the world after being enslaved in brothels.
