Wisconsin authorities filed a murder charge today in connection with the death of a Hmong hunter near Green Bay. A criminal complaint alleges that the defendant made disparaging remarks about Hmong people to investigators. James Nichols is charged with first degree murder in the death of Cha Vang, who was found shot and stabbed to death earlier this month. Vang's widow is among those who have speculated the killing was racially motivated and may have been in retaliation for a 2004 incident in which a Hmong immigrant living in Saint Paul was convicted of killing six white hunters near Hayward, Wisconsin.Kou Xiong, the Hmong liason for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, says a number of Hmong hunters - including his family members - have feared retaliation since that incident.
