A bill that would allow Hmong cultural marriages to be recognized by the state of Minnesota gets a hearing tomorrow at the state Capitol. The bill would give the Mej Koob the authority to formalize cultural marriages. Right now, they only act as negotiators for the families in a cultural ceremony. The bill would also require the Mej Koob to report marriages involving underage girls. But DFL Representative Cy Thao, who is Hmong, says he doesn't know of any underage marriages taking place. And he says Senator Wes Skoglund's bill doesn't address that issue.
