St. Paul's Ordway Center for the Performing Arts has been awarded a two hundred fifty thousand dollar grant from the city of St. Paul, a move that's raised the ire of a coalition of smaller arts organizations in the city. The Ordway is in the midst of a five million dollar capital campaign and says the city's show of support will boost its fundraising efforts. Smaller arts organizations say the grant -- which adds up to one-quarter of the city's annual arts budget -- leaves little left for groups wielding less clout. Neil Cuthbert is the Arts Program Officer at the McKnight Foundation. He acknowledges the city's decision may be hard for some to swallow. But he says the Ordway is facing a key phase in its development and the money comes at a vital time in its history.
