Bryne is accused of starting a running gun battle with police earlier this week. In the wake of those shootings, many were surprised to learn that Byrne had served on six and a half years in prison after being convicted of murdering two people 35 years ago. Jan Smaby heads the Hennepin County Department of Corrections and was the first chair of Minnesota's Sentencing Guidelines Commission.
