All Things Considered’s John Rabe talks with Freya Manfred about her father, American writer Frederick Manfred. The two discuss Freya’s family memories and about a tribute being done for the novelist. Freya also reads an excerpt from The Golden Bowl, Frederick Manfred’s first book.
Manfred was author of 34 books, including his best known work Lord Grizzly. Manfred has been compared to William Faulkner and Homer for his depictions of life. He lived near the southwest Minnesota community of Laverne, on a hill overlooking the region he called "Siouxland." Manfred passed away on September 7th, 1994, at the age of 82.
